An unclaimed bag containing a water bottle and a tiffin was discovered on the district courtroom advanced in Sector 43, Chandigarh, on Tuesday after a radical search following a bomb risk.

Judges, advocates, clerical employees and guests had been evacuated from the advanced that homes 30 courtrooms and lawyer chambers. The space was cordoned off and senior police officers rushed to the spot.

A search was performed after Chandigarh Police obtained info from the Haryana Police management room.

“A bag was discovered with a water bottle and a tiffin although no explosives had been present in them. We have known as the military’s bomb disposal workforce from Chandimandir,” Chandigarh senior superintendent of police Manisha Choudhary said.

The bomb detection teams conducted searches at the adjoining Sector 43 inter-state bus stand and Punjab and Haryana high court but did not find any explosive, she said. To ensure no slip-up amid the security alert in the run-up to Republic Day, the army has been asked to check, she added.

Police security at the High Court has been increased.

District Bar Association president Shankar Gupta said, “Around midday, the police requested us to vacate the courtroom premises citing info concerning a bomb on the courtroom premises.”
