Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Japan’s Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi to enter the semi-finals of the Korea Open 2023 badminton tournament at the Jinnam Stadium on Friday. Satwik and Chirag, seeded third and world number three in the badminton rankings, beat former world champions Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi 21-14, 21-17 in a quarter-final that lasted 40 minutes.
Fourth win in 5 matches
It was the Indian pair’s fourth win in five encounters over the former world No. 1 Japanese pair. In the quarterfinals, the Indian pair quickly took control of the first game with two straight five-points each. From 5-5 the score becomes 15-6 in favor of Chirag-Satwik. The Japanese pair won the next four points but the gap proved too big to overcome and the Indians won the first game 21-14.
Amazing performance of Indians in the second game as well
In the second game, both the teams were tied at 8-8 but the Indian badminton players changed gears by winning 6 consecutive points to take a 14-9 lead. Hoki-Kobayashi won three points in a row to level the scores at 16-16. But the Indian pair won the game 21-17. Satwiksairaj and Chirag will play second seeds and world number two pair of China’s Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang in the semi-finals on Saturday.
Notably, the results of the Korea Open count towards the qualifying rankings of players for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The qualification window for badminton started from May 1 this year.
