METHUEN (CBS) — Some very uncommon cattle native to Ireland are going up for adoption in Massachusetts on account of an animal cruelty case.

Shannon Rice-Nichols, of Hadley, is going through 35 counts of felony animal cruelty expenses. The MSPCA says legislation enforcement confirmed up at an Amherst property and located animals “in very serious trouble” again on March 14. A cow and two goats that have been struggling needed to be euthanized on the scene.

A veterinarian decided that the animals have been “severely neglected and malnourished” and affected by parasites, in response to the MSPCA. They have been dropped at Nevins Farm in Methuen, the place a group has been working to deliver them again to good well being.

There are 22 goats, a Holstein cow and eight “Kerry” cattle out there for adoption. Kerry cattle are an “extremely rare” and critically endangered breed of cows descended from Ireland. They have “all but disappeared from the American landscape,” in response to the MSPCA.

“We are working closely with the American Kerry Cattle Association now to help identify an adopter to ensure these individual animals will be well cared for and to aid in the preservation of this majestic breed,” MSPCA adoption packages director Mike Keiley mentioned in an announcement. “We’re excited that the work we have done to protect and care for these animals may also prevent this breed of cattle from going extinct.”
