NATICK – Have you ever wished to personal a chunk of historical past? An almost 300-year-old house is up on the market in Natick. It’s known as the Henry Loker House and is on town’s registry of historic properties.
The Natick Historical Society says the Lokers have an extended historical past of naming their kids Henry Loker. The man who constructed the house is not as well-known as his son. Henry Loker Jr. commanded a militia within the Battle of Bunker Hill.
“In Natick, there is a street named after them. There used to be a school named after them. There is a park in the Walnut Hill district,” defined Gail Coughlin, Research Manager with the Natick Historical Society.
For the final 40 years, Julie and Chris Gordon have lived on the dwelling on Winter Street. They have tried to protect the historical past that is still. Because the house in-built 1728 is just not on the nationwide registry of historic properties, they’re allowed to make some trendy upgrades.
“Because we aren’t on the national registry, we could put modern indoor screens and storm windows over them,” added Julie Gordon, speaking about her home windows from the 1700s or 1800s, “To love a house like this you want to have the kind of detail we tried to keep in it while we modernized it.”
The kitchen nonetheless has a beehive oven that was used to make bread within the 1700’s. Some flooring have been refinished with wooden from the 1800s. There can also be a second half to the house that was initially constructed to be a cobbler store.
“Cobbler shops in Natick are quite interesting. In the early 19th century, they started out as one room workshops, and later the shoe industry in Natick transformed to a factory industry,” stated Coughlin.
The Gordons are transferring on the from the house they love, and trying to downsize. They will nonetheless have lasting recollections there.
“We had a candelabra hanging over our dining room table, and we would eat by candlelight. We would have 25 people for Thanksgiving dinner,” smiled Julie. “It will be one of the things we miss.”
The house is listed for $850,000.
