Over 78 per cent turnout was recorded within the first section of the Assembly ballot in Manipur as of 5 pm on Monday. Several incidents of violence marred elections to 38 Assembly constituencies.

The voting started at 7 am in 1,721 polling stations in 5 districts amid tight safety. One individual was reportedly injured in a conflict between two events in Churachandpur. EVMs have been broken by miscreants at Saitu, Henglep and Singhat constituencies. FIRs have been registered within the incidents of EVM injury in seven polling stations, the CEO mentioned. Congress employees allegedly vandalised a BJP polling sales space in Kakwa space in Imphal West, whereas a car of an NPP candidate was broken by a rival group in Keirao. Security forces fired within the air to regulate the gang at New Keithelmanbi polling station in Kangpokpi. The scenario arose after Congress accused BJP of making an attempt to seize the sales space.

Prominent candidates whose fates sealed have been CM N Biren Singh (Heingang), Speaker Y Khemchand Singh (Singjamei), Deputy CM Yumnam Joykumar Singh (Uripok) and state Congress chief N Lokesh Singh (Nambol)
