A person who crashed a U-Haul truck containing a Nazi flag close to the White House has been arrested and charged with attempting to kill or hurt the president, police mentioned Tuesday.

The driver apparently drove intentionally into bollards outdoors Lafayette Park simply earlier than 10:00 pm (0200 GMT) on Monday, the US Park Police mentioned, including that nobody was injured.

TV photographs confirmed a purple and black swastika banner that had been discovered throughout a police search of the truck.

The driver of the automobile was recognized as Sai Varshith Kandula, 19, of Chesterfield, Missouri, the Park Police mentioned in an announcement Tuesday.

It mentioned he was charged with “assault with a dangerous weapon, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, threatening to kill/kidnap/ inflict harm on a president, vice president, or family member, destruction of federal property, and trespassing.”

A neighborhood Fox affiliate reported that some company in a close-by resort mentioned they have been informed to evacuate after the crash.
